JAPAN - KYOTO GEISHA DISTRICT

The Gion District was originally built to accommodate and entertain visitors to the Gion Shrine.  Later it evolved into the main Geisha centre of Japan and much of it is a national preservation area.  It is also a popular centre for restaurants, clubs, bars and gaming houses.
